On The Road by Jack Kerouac

This Beat classic has been sitting on my bookshelf for a few years now and so when I heard about the upcoming Hollywood film of this book I decided it was high time I got familiar with it before I see too many trailers and lose the ability to create my own visualisations.

Jack Kerouac wrote this book against the backdrop of the cold war and at a time when ordinary Americans were becoming wrought with fear under the watchful eye of government officials on the search for communist-sympathisers and Soviet Spies. While all of this tension was going on the young people of America were in search of freedom, unrestrained by the pressures of regular life, they were pondering the question 'how are we to live?' and they spent their youths looking everywhere along the road for the answer.

On The Road is an autobiographical novel and tells of Jack Kerouc and Neil Cassadys adventures travelling, loving, dancing, suffering, discovering everything before their eyes and experimenting with getting high. The characters would all later be renamed before publication upon the instruction of the publishers so Jack Kerouac would become Sal Paradise and Neil Cassady became the brave, wild, tender, loving, unfaithful, human sponge and eternally free Dean Moriarty.

Here's what the blurb says...

Sal Paradise (Sam Riley), a young innocent, joins his hero Dean Moriarty (Garrett Hedlund), a traveller and mystic, the living epitome of Beat, on a breathless, exuberant ride back and forth across the United States. Their hedonistic search for release or fulfilment through drink, sex, drugs and jazz becomes an exploration of personal freedom, a test of the limits of the American dream. A brilliant blend of fiction and autobiography, Jack Kerouac's exhilarating novel swings to the rhythms of 1950s underground America, racing towards the sunset with unforgettable exuberance, poignancy and autobiographical passion. One of the most influential and important novels of the 20th century, On the Road is the book that launched the Beat Generation and remains the bible of that literary movement.

Read this book before you see the film, I can't imagine that any two hour film could capture all of the ups and downs and rich descriptive passages that are between the pages. I'm a fan of Garrett Hedlund though and can't wait to see him on the big screen as the eratic Dean Moriarty flitting from one thought to the next, entranced by beautiful exotic women and becoming enthralled in down & dirty jazz riffs.

Defintiely a book to devour if you're thinking of taking a road trip across the great United States of America!

Chicken, Leek and Butter Bean Stew

I sometimes find it very hard to start cooking a big meal when I return home from a long day at work so I love it when I find a simple recipe that doesn't take too long and like this one, can be cooked in one dish (less washing up!).

What You Will Need:

olive oil
1 onion (sliced)
1 garlic clove (crushed)
4 chicken thighs fillets (without skin) - cut into chunks
2 leeks (sliced)
150ml chicken stock (I used knorr stock cubes)
400g tin butter beans
bunch chopped parsley

How To Cook
  • Heat roughly 2 tbsp of oil in a large casserole dish/tray on the hob (make sure your dish is suitable for use on the hob!)
  • Add the sliced onion to the oil and fry for roughly 4 minutes until it is soft (but not browned)
  • Next add the garlic, chicken & leeks and stir until the chicken is browned
  • Add your chicken stock and bring it all to a simmer, cook for about 8 minutes until the leeks are just soft and the chicken is completely cooked.
  • Finally stir in the drained butter beans and raise the heat a little. Stir in the Parsley, season well and enjoy with a big crusty roll!

A Sunday Trip To The Lake District

On Sunday L'Homme and I were after a bit of fresh air and decided to take a drive to the countryside and the beautiful Lake District. We had a lovely stroll around the historic market town of Kendal and sheltered from the rain under the canopy of a cosy traditional cafe drinking tea and people watching.

After returning from my lovely hol to Portugal greeted with more Great British rain I was in need of a midweek lunchtime treat so I popped to Moose Coffee in Liverpool for a little chocolate warmth!

Moose Coffee does authentic American & Canadian breakfast with an emphasis on ethically sourced ingredients and a desire to bring the great NYC breakfast to our little city.

I adore the coffee bean moose heads on the big mugs and the hot milk and melting chocolate pop was so tasty and comforting sheltering from the rain. After the food menu caught our attention we will definately be heading back their soon for some tasty lunch!

The New Hampshire and Lone Star Mooses sound so very delicious.

Can I Have Them All Please?!

I love high heels with their leg slimming, height increasing, instant glamour impact but they lose their lust factor when I'm walking to the train station and then have to stand in the busy carriage. So when a heel seems like just too much hassle I still like my feet to look delicate and pretty, that's were the perfect ballet pump comes in to play. It's a wardrobe essential that gets me easily from A to B with no sore knees, trip-hazards or heel snapping worries and H&M are ruling the high street with their huge variety for just £7.99!!! I want one in every colour.

French chic at its very best!
